THE MYTHOLOGY OF THE « LÂN »
The Lân, a mythical creature in Vietnamese culture, is often depicted as a unicorn with the body of a lion and the grace of a dragon. As one of the four sacred animals in Vietnamese mythology, alongside the Dragon, Turtle, and Phoenix, the Lân symbolizes earthly power, protection, and prosperity. It is considered a guardian of sacred spaces such as temples, pagodas, and royal residences, ensuring harmony and divine protection.

The Lân’s image reflects strength, wisdom, and the balance between the celestial and terrestrial worlds, making it an enduring symbol of Vietnamese cultural heritage.
Symbolizing peace and good fortune, the Lân is typically featured in lion dances celebrating the start of a new year, a business, or an inaugural ceremony.
THE LEGEND OF THE LION DANCE
The Lion Dance, or Múa Lân, is a cultural tradition influenced by Chinese practices but adapted to Vietnamese history and beliefs. It is often performed during Tết (Lunar New Year) and other celebrations to ward off evil spirits and bring luck and prosperity. Here is a version of the Vietnamese legend surrounding Múa Lân:
The Legend of the Guardian Lion/Unicorn
Long ago, a Vietnamese village at the foot of a mountain was frequently struck by natural disasters—floods, storms, and earthquakes. These calamities were believed to be caused by malevolent spirits haunting the area. Desperate, the villagers prayed to the deities for help.
In response, the Jade Emperor (Ngọc Hoàng), ruler of the heavens, sent a Kỳ Lân (a mythical creature often translated as « lion » or « unicorn ») to protect the village. This majestic being symbolized peace, prosperity, and justice, with a powerful body, a fiery mane, and vibrant energy.
When the Kỳ Lân descended from the sky, it performed a majestic dance throughout the village, driving away the evil spirits with its divine presence. The disasters ceased immediately, and peace was restored. Since that day, the Kỳ Lân’s dance has been reenacted by humans to honor the divine creature and invoke its protection.
Modern Celebrations
Today, Múa Lân is performed during Tết, business openings, and weddings. Dance troupes parade through the streets, stopping at homes and shops to offer blessings. Families and businesses often reward the dancers with « lì xì » (red envelopes containing money) as a sign of gratitude.
Múa Lân remains a vital part of Vietnamese heritage, preserving the legend of the Kỳ Lân and embodying the spirit of protection and prosperity.
